Want some masala in your hamantaschen?

In honor of Purim this Sunday, we feel like this Dana International melody is perfect to jump-start our weekend. Dana International, to those Eurovison deprived, is an international superstar known for her dance-able beats and supreme voice. Oh, and she's probably the most well recognized transsexual in the world.

In Secret Hodi (Movie from India), Dana performs a duet with Isreali cutie, Idan Yaniv. The song is great and the video is just the right amount of camp. Dana, get started on some new music, girl!!! In the meantime, enjoy below:

We all want world peace

While there have been scattered hijra pageants in India in the past, earlier this week, Mumbai hosted the nation's first formal transgender pageant. Auditions for "Super Queen" have been taking place across the country for the past several weeks; contestants had been handpicked from ten Indian cities. Veteran actor Zeenat Aman and starlet/LGBT activist Celina Jaitley were on hand as judges.

The event has been organized by 12 Noon entertainment; some of you may be familiar with its CEO, trans-activist Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi. Impressively, they have been able to garner support from the likes of Salman Khan and even Pratibha Patil, the current President of India. While we at Queeristan are sorting through the media trickling in, we have been by conflicted by the dichotomous the use of "eunuch" by some sources and "transgender" by others. From our knowledge, the pageant did not require contestants to be hijras; however, if any of our readers know more information, please do share.

Regardless, it is extraordinary that such an undertaking has gained so much (positive) media buzz both within India as well as abroad. We send our congratulations to the winner, Bobby, and all the contestants. We would take this chance to drop the word "fierce", but it's not 2006.

Can we say "whipped"?

"A sex change is not always good. Neither is blind love. Dipu Ghosh, a homosexual from New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, thought that by changing his sex, he would seal the deal with his fellow gay partner, Ajit Mondal. In fact, Mondal had allegedly egged Ghosh to go in for the sex-change operation. But three months later, Mondal has done a vanishing trick. Dipu, on the other hand, cannot go back to his pre-operation status as a sex change operation is for good. Riled by his ex-partner's selfishness, Ghosh has lodged a complaint with the Jalpaiguri police station. "Money is not a problem for me. I am ready to give Ajit everything, a beautiful life... I'll fulfil all his dreams. But he has no right to insult my love," says Ghosh who makes a living by working as a bar girl in Mumbai. "

Moral of the story- don't change yourself for someone else. And if you do, you're whipped!

Kolkata Opens First Trans Shelter

A Kolkata NGO has recently opened a shelter for transsexual men. The home in the West Bengal city opens on the heels of the creation of a similar facility in Ahmedabad, that one directed towards elderly gay men.

People Like Us (Plus) has financed the project with the help of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Agniva Lahiri, founder of Plus, states that the home's "basic aim is to provide shelter to migrant transsexual males who come to the city to earn their livelihood." Plus will provide up to 15 days (and in some cases more) of free housing; residents will also gain access to medical care and counseling.

More and more of India's metropolises are paying attention to their trans community. The Government of Tamil Nadu recently constituted a separate welfare board for its transgendered population; the legislature is the first of its kind in India. It looks like the queer movement is spreading across the subcontinent, can you feel it?

Transgender Talk Show Host in India

Following Pakistani Begum Nawazish Ali's footsteps, India has revealed a new talk show with transgender Rose called "Ippadiku Rose" (Yours, Rose). Her new show generated quite some buzz, getting the attention of the NYTimes. "We will be tackling subject that are very controversial in nature, from gay rights to sexual abuse and prostitution," said Pradeep Milroy Peter, the station's head of programming. Already, the show has made this clear with its focus on women's issues - the first episode, which aired March 5th, dealt with the sexual harassment of women and the second episode will deal with the exploitation of women in the modelling industry.

The NYTimes article muddles the terms hijra, transgender, and transsexual, but no worries! The leading newspaper in the US may not be informative enough for you but this meager blog will soon provide you handy definitions. Coming soon :)

A shout out to our Persian FTMs & MTFs

Last month, Iran processed over 100 applications for government subsidized sex-change operations. The country's State Welfare Organization is set to spend 6 billion rials ($647,000) on gender reassignment surgeries. Surprised?

In a nation where homosexuality is habitually punished by death, how does Iran negotiate its support of trans rights?

Unlike homosexuality, which Iran's religious leaders see as a sin, transsexuality is viewed as a treatable disorder. Mohammad Mehdi Kariminia, a cleric who wrote a thesis on the rights and duties of transsexuals, states thats these people are "trapped" in the wrong gender and that they are doing nothing immoral. Hassan Moussavi Chalak, head of the agency's office of social injuries went on to say that "they have rights such as every other citizen.''

Iran's stance on this one issue is admirable. However when it comes to something as fluid as sexuality, drawing a morality line in the sand is nearly impossible. I'm still not convinced if the government truly cares, so just wants a simple solution to ensure cultural homogeny. Regardless, I'm happy that these members of the queer community are getting the financial help they deserve.
